HARSHIL- GARTANG GALI &

GANGOTRI TEMPLE

[ 3 Days/ 2 Nights (Ex-Dehradun) ]

Located in the picturesque Nelong Valley near the Indo-China border, the almost two hundred year old Gartang Gali is a 136-m-long wood-lined stairway that is said to have been built by Peshawari Pathans, who created an architectural masterpiece by cutting the granite of a vertical rock face. This route was traditionally used by merchants trading between India and Tibet.

The elderly people here say that before independence, the people of Uttarkashi district had built the track via Nelong Valley for trade with Tibet. This trek in Gangotri National Highway was prepared by cutting the steep and complex rocks near Bhairon Ghati, by laying an iron rod and laying wood on it. Through this route wool, leather cloth and salt were transported from Tibet to Badahat of Uttarkashi. This bridge gives an exciting view of the Nelong Valley.

The ancient bridge served as a trade route between India and Tibet for years. Dorjis (Tibetan merchants) frequented the bridge traversing the picturesque route to reach the town of Uttarkashi to trade local specialties like Pashmina, spices, gold and wool as well as staples like salt and jaggery.
